In a recent survey SSI conducted across seven countries, at least half of all respondents plan on watching some of the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. Enthusiasm is highest among our panel in Spain (77% plan to watch at least part of the event), followed by Germany (66%), the United Kingdom (57%), France (56%), and Japan (55%). Enthusiasm in Canada (36%) and the United States (22%) is well below the other countries tested. However, there is more interest in watching this year’s World Cup among these territories compared to the 2006 event.
2006 Vs. 2010 World Cup
More participants plan on watching the 2010 World Cup than those that watched the 2006 World Cup. This potential increase in viewership exists across all countries (5 to 12 percentage points), except in Germany, which shows no decline in viewership even though the last World Cup was held in Germany. Could the excitement of the competition be enough to exploit all the potential and possibly make this the most watched World Cup yet? We shall wait and see.
Who Will Win the World Cup?
Brazil is considered to be the favorite of the 2010 World Cup among our panelists. Brazil received the most votes among three of the countries tested (Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom). Brazil was among the top two vote getters in all of the countries surveyed. Germany, Spain, and the USA picked their own country’s team ahead of Brazil. France was evenly split between Spain and Brazil. Spain was among the top three vote getters in five of the countries tested.
Who Will Win the World Cup?
Although not every country felt their own team was most likely to win, every country was far more likely to back their own teams than the other countries polled.
